@Wateristas out in the world...
People + Nature! This week in Guyana a group of local government, @conservationorg and @deltares colleagues visited sites along the vulnerable coast - collecting insights and developing green-gray coastal defense strategies. Being with these amazing people in these amazing places is what I missed most over the last 2 years! #deltares
Excited to announce this first of its kind document - a tool to identify, fund, plan, design, construct, and monitor green-gray infrastructure projects, to increase the resilience of vulnerable cities, communities, and assets around the world.
The Global Green-Gray Community of Practice continues to build the knowledge base about how to implement green-gray infrastructure solutions, and we are committed to pre-competitive collaboration to create fertile ground for innovation and new partnerships within and across sectors.
Please, put this guide to use and join us! https://lnkd.in/gFY8f3g #greengray #sustainableinfrastructure #naturebasedsolutions #climatechange #adaptation @conservationorg
Want to dream about a brighter & greener future? Not too late to join tomorrow’s webinar co-hosted by @conservationorg global #greengray community of practice!
Admittedly I have a strong bias here - but how refreshing is it to hear about Climate SOLUTIONS! ... like #greengray 😊 “Green-gray infrastructure can help strengthen a community’s protection against extreme floods, storms and rapid sea-level rise; provide crucial benefits such as fresh water and fisheries; and remove carbon from the atmosphere — it’s a win-win-win.” @conservationorg blog link in bio #winwinwin by @kileyjprice

Birds’ eye view of shrimp ponds in #ecuador, the country’s second largest export after oil. Historically #shrimp ponds have been a driver of #mangrove deforestation - we are working on models to change that! (& my first time in a helicopter!)
An unforgettable experience visiting the Bogota River's Guandoque subbasin, in the high mountain #paramo ecosystem above #bogota . We visited @conservationorg Colombia‘s #restoration sites designed as a series of circular nuclei that will join with time. I am standing in front of a fog capture net, working to keep the surrounding soil moist, with the national restoration strategy manager from the national environmental ministry -- who said multiple times how impressed he was with the project's restoration methodology. What do you think?
Standing on the banks of the #riobogota, flowing with untreated wastewater from ~10 million city inhabitants. Good news: rehabilitating the river is a national priority. Ideally with ecosystem #restoration and #greengray. ¿Es posible @riobogota ?
10 years ago this urban channel in #bogota was filled to the brim with trash, the adjacent banks void of vegetation and thieves made it a dangerous place to venture. Fast forward to today - community led efforts supported by a consortium of partners, led by @conservationorg have transformed the Quebrada Las Delicias into a forested urban corridor, home to diverse plant and animal species. Though in the grips of gentrification, new and old community members seem to value this hidden treasure. #greengray #urbancreeks

Powerful story telling about coastal #climatechange impacts along the #northbrazilshelf
In Suriname this week talking about integrated coastal management and coastal green-gray climate adaptation strategies for the North Brazil Shelf region. Had a great discussion about the potential for mangrove restoration to slow coastal erosion with Mr. Rudolph Adams from the National Agricultural Research and Extension Institute in Guyana, Profesor Naipal from the Anton de Kom University of Suriname, Michael Mak from Silvestrum Associates in California, and Hannake Van Lavieren from World Wildlife Fund.

Grateful for the Seattle @conservationorg team for the drone flying and data processing intro - planning to use the #mavic2pro and #pix4d for site assessments, concept design development, and long term monitoring of #greengrayinfrastructure projects.
It’s been a busy and productive week here in Suriname: 5 presentations with discussions to a total of ~100 people ranging from Director of the Country’s Ministry of Public Works, community members near @conservationorg Suriname’s Green-Gray Infrastructure pilot site, and engineers at University + 5 site visits. Not one person disagreed with the #greengray premise and approach as a climate adaptation solution & we came away with good next steps to advance #greengray at CI Suriname’s pilot site. And new friends ⭐️⭐️⭐️ #Suriname
Proud to be working with @conservationorg to build a green-gray infrastructure program: providing climate change adaptation solutions to people by combining restoration and/or conservation with the selective use of conventional "gray" engineering techniques. For example, we are working to restore mangrove ecosystems, not only because of their ability to buffer the impacts of sea level rise and extreme weather events, but also capture and store carbon in their dense and rich soil layers. #greengray #inournature #mangrove #ecuador #bluecarbon
Art + innovation; the Living Wall is irrigated (mostly) with captured stormwater and condensation from the building’s HVAC system. Any extra irrigation water is captured and recirculated; sensors monitor moisture to efficiently manage how much and when the plants are watered.
It was an honor today to support my friend and colleague from @conservationorg Jocel Pangilinan talk at the Global Climate Action Summit. Tonight another super typhoon #mangkhut is excepted to make landfall in the Philippines, where Jocel is from - making us all acutely aware of the urgency and relevancy of our work restoring and protecting mangroves along vulnerable coastal communities.#stepup2018
On a recent “Saving Venice” water tour, learned about the now abandoned #rainwater / #stormwater #harvesting systems installed within the plazas (or Campos) dotted throughout the City. The water filtered through a subsurface sand layer below the plaza then collected in a central well. The well was generally locked, with the key kept by the local mayor, and only opened at specific times. In modern times an aquaduct has been built beneath the lagoon to deliver electricity and potable water to the islands from the mainland. The first phase of delivery, before the complicated process of bring potable water to each house, was to bring the freshwater to these existing #community #waterhubs. #oldisnewagain #waternerd
